The Life of An Artist

Ahh...the life of a busy artist!  From writing, to making jewelry, and taking pictures, it's a wonder how or when I get any sleep.  I just finished updating the photography page on my website and it's exactly 3:16 a.m.!

I just can't seem to stop...the ideas just keep on flowing in...

Crafters and Artists Unite!

I love how the internet has opened up a whole other world to me.  It gives me the chance to travel to far off distant places and "meet" other people who share my same interests...

Today I came across Gina Halladay's blog, a quilter here in Southern California.  Coincidentally, Gina is married to Hal Halladay, who is the CEO of Know More Media.  Know More Media is the company I do some blogging for.  Small world, eh?

Now, I'm not a quilter, but as an artist I can appreciate the design process of a quilt.  My mother (God rest her soul) made a quilt for me when I was younger and unfortunately never kept it.

Anyhow, Gina is also a phenomenal writer and blogger and has truly inspired me... Visit her blog to find out more about quilting and check out some colorful projects:  http://www.quiltersbuzz.com

Spring Flowers Bring Inspiration

Purple FlowersI've always been in love with the color purple...ever since I was a little girl.  On my way to the post office the other day I had to stop and take a picture of these flowers.  The color is so refreshing and peaceful to me.  The colors certainly inspired a few jewelry pieces in the same color, which I'll post as soon as I take the pictures.

I've been researching techniques on taking photos of jewelry.  I want people to really see how beautiful the pieces are....

I'm A Jewelry Making Machine!

New Jewelry by Maria Palma

I've been cranking out new jewelry like there's no tomorrow!  Of course, I've taken some breaks to do some blogging.  But other than that, just trying to stay focused on making jewelry for this weekend.  I used to make jewelry while watching TV, but since I've banned myself from watching TV, I'm listening to music instead - which has actually given me more energy when making jewelry. The picture here is a few of the pieces I've made in the past day and half.

It's something about making jewelry that you just lose your sense of time.  I guess that happens when you're doing something you love!

Jean Keil of Blue Water Beads Finds Her True Passion

I just read an article about how Jean Keil first opened her store called Blue Water Beads in Manasquan, New Jersey.  Jean was a computer software developer wanting a new career - something that was a "little more people focused".  She made jewelry as a hobby, but it dawned on her to make it into a career.  Thus, the opening of Blue Water Beads.

"Beading is very calming," Keil said. "It is mindful enough that you have to concentrate on it, but not mindful enough where it is work."

I find it truly inspiring to read stories like this - of people who finally find their true passions in life - especially when it is in the realm of being creative.

Preparing For the Adams Avenue Roots Festival

It's been awhile since I've posted.  I've been preparing for the Adams Avenue Roots Festival which will be taking place this weekend here in San Diego.  So, I've been busy making jewelry!  It'll be my first time showing at this event, so I'm excited....

I was at Kobey's Swap Meet this weekend and I hope to be able to make it down there to sell at least one day a weekend - most likely Saturdays.  If you live here in San Diego and would like to be notified of events that I'm doing, visit: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/salondemaria/ to subscribe.

I'll try to post more pictures this week!

Spring Flowers Photo and New Bracelet

Well, the weather seems to getting pretty warm here in San Diego, so I thought I'd walk to the bookstore today and on the way capture the signs of spring!  I saw these flowers in the front of a shopping center and they were calling me to take a picture of them...so here I share with you!  Wish you were here :)

Spring Flowers

And for a new addition to the jewelry collection.  This is a stark contrast from the picture above, but it seems like the fashion colors for this spring are black and white.  So in the spirit of art and fashion, I present this black three-stranded bracelet which is available at a special introductory price of $15! This one is made of hematite, glass beads, and quartz.

A Quote To Share

I received this via email today from the Oprah website:

"Be your own work of art. Cultivate friends, passions, a distinctive
style. Learn, dare, and grow. Beauty is the bonus of a well-lived life."

For me, art is a true passion in my life.  Not just in terms of creativity - there is the art of peace, the art of love, the art of expressing ourselves and being genuine in all our dealings.

In other news, I've added a new bracelet to my bracelet gallery.  It's made with raspberry quartz, a favorite of mine!  Today was the first really warm day in San Diego which could mean that spring is finally here.  It gave me the motivation to start getting more jewelry on the website so all you ladies have pretty accessories to wear with those cute dresses!

Anticipating A Trip to the Bead Store

I'm running low on beads, which has left me a little uninspired.  It happens sometimes. I'm looking forward to my next trip to the bead store!  A visit to the bead store is like visiting Willie Wonka's chocolate factory - never been to a chocolate factory, but I'm pretty sure it's the same experience.  Exhilirating!

My favorite bead stores here in San Diego are:

Alotta Jewelry - thank God they moved locations.  The downtown store was very crowded.  The new store is almost like a warehouse!  Rows and rows of beads and I just never have enough time to look at everything...

Gem Mall - this store is located right by the Sports Arena.  A wide selection of beads and good prices if you sign up for the memberships.

If you've never visited a bead store before, I suggest you do.  You'll feel like you entered a candy store.  And who knows, you may be inspired to start making jewelry yourself Laughing
