A question that I get asked often is how I started my jewelry business, so today I’m going to share my story...
It all started during college about seven years ago when I was shopping in a little boutique in Chico, California. I noticed a bead store next door to the boutique and thought I’d just look around. I was immediately drawn to the assortment of colors and textures of all the different types of beads. The shopkeeper in the bead store was sitting at a desk making a necklace. I watched and listened closely as she showed me step-by-step how to make it. I caught on very quick....
I first started out making stretch bracelets with elastic and glass beads bought from the bead store and the JoAnn Fabric store in Chico . I didn’t have the budget yet to buy expensive semi-precious gemstones and all the components and tools to make necklaces and bracelets with clasps. I would stay up at night and as I sat in front of the TV, I would work on jewelry. I do have some of my early pieces around somewhere. I’ll dig them up and post them soon.
As the years progressed my jewelry making skills got better. After college I moved to San Diego

(where I live now) and found out where all the good bead stores are. I would always browse through jewelry making magazines like
Step by Step Beads to get ideas and learn new techniques. I would make jewelry for myself and friends.
One day my best friend asked if I would be interested in starting a jewelry business with her. She was interested in learning how to make jewelry and I was certainly interested in making money doing something I love.
We started off selling at school events and fundraisers. Then we showed at
ArtWalk two years ago. After ArtWalk I decided to go off on my own because it seemed like my friend was losing interest in the business. Her passion wasn’t as strong as mine.
Fast forward to now and I’m selling my jewelry via my little shop at
Etsy. I still do fundraising events and once in awhile head down to the local swap meet to sell. I collect email addresses from my customers (with their permission, of course) and add them to my email list to keep them updated on my whereabouts and new products.
However, now I am focusing on adding all my jewelry to my Etsy shop and doing online marketing via Google Adwords to get customers to my website. I’m also working on getting my jewelry in boutiques around San Diego by posting ads on
Craigslist and word-of-mouth advertising. Another thing I would like to do is jewelry parties where people can make their own jewelry or purchase jewelry - similar to Cookie Lee Jewelry or Avon parties. So, if you’re in San Diego and would like to host a jewelry party, let me know!
I came across some resources that have start-up jewelry making kits available:
