Art and Anatomy

One thing I want to be good at is drawing the body.  I met an artist at the bookstore one day who gave me a quick tutorial, but I haven’t gotten around to actually practicing what he taught me.  One time in drawing class back in college I drew a skeleton, but it ended up looking like a tree during the winter time!

The San Diego Chiropractic blog says this about art and anatomy:

“...The spine and skeleton by the way draw beautiful lines if you look at them from various directions. Why would an artist not use the beauty of the straight mobile spine and contrast it to the degenerated crooked spine?”

Drawing the skeleton is truly an art form and there are many artists who make a great living fromVitruvian Man by Leonardo Da Vinci doing this.  I came across this drawing of a figure with skeleton and spinal nerves and realized just how many curvy lines and how much shading is involved in creating the bones in our body.  Getting the proportions right is the tricky part for me.

One artist who was phenomenal at drawing the human body is Leonardo Da Vinci.  We know him well for Vitruvian Man (pictured here), The Last Supper and Mona Lisa, but he also did a large number of paintings depicting the Madonna Child.  His paintings were highly complex and very detailed.

By the way:  The San Diego Chiropractic blog is hosting a writing contest for those of you who love writing short stories.  The contest ends on March 31st.  It’s been awhile since I’ve written fiction, but I’ll probably give it a shot!
