Digital Art is Exciting Again

Bamboo small pen tabletWhen I first embarked into the digital art world about seven years ago, I had no idea how amazing it was going to be.  I got my first digital camera and I was ecstatic that I didn't have to buy film and take it to the photo lab anymore.  And now all the excitement is back again with the arrival of my new Bamboo pen tablet.  I felt like a five-year-old on Christmas Day as I opened the box and unwrapped this little tool.  It's the little things that make me happy :)Mother's Day greeting cards

With this pen tablet I can create freehand digital drawings and hand-write notes which can be turned into text documents in Word (although I still prefer to type...much faster).  There's a great deal of other stuff I can do with this pen tablet that I haven't explored yet.  However, the main reason I bought it was to draw freehand in Photoshop.  I bought the small version, but I know pretty soon I'll want to go "pro" and get a bigger one.

So I unleashed the creative juices today and created a couple pieces which I turned into Mother's Day greeting cards.  They're available at my CafePress shop.  Stay tuned for more!

Well, now it's back to the "drawing board" for more practice so I can start creating art like this "Cherry Blossoms" piece by Esther Kirby...

The Marriage of Art and Fashion

Art-and-Fashion.png It's been a busy blogging week for me.  Trying to catch up with all the coverage of New York Fashion Week is absolutely mind boggling and I don't know why I feel the need to know what every single designer sent down the runway.  The shows are almost over and I've barely scratched the surface.  However, I've managed to share some thoughts on two of my favorite designers while showing love to fellow beauty bloggers who are actually in "the tents" at Bryant Park.

For me, art and fashion have always been one and the same.  My mother sewed all my clothes when I was a young girl - not to mention that she was also a great artist as well.  So art and fashion has been part of my life for as long as I can remember.

Valentine's Day Greeting Cards: Nurturing My Creative Side

It was an artsy-groovy day and I was in the mood to make some Valentine's Day cards to add to my online shops.  I recently bought a box of heart-themed die cuts from Michael's and felt the need to put them to good use...

Heart-Die-Cuts.jpg

I threw in a "love mix" CD filled with music from Alicia Keys, Robin Thicke, Prince, and others. The music definitely gave me a creativity boost :) Here are a couple of the creations I made today...

A Flower Painting That Inspires

Bird Song by Andrew Francis.JPG One of my favorite subjects to paint are flowers, so I'm eagerly anticipating the spring months that are coming ahead.  Spring is my favorite time of the year not only because of my birthday, but because of all the new blossoms and explosions of colors that cover the earth.

As I searched for inspiration for my next painting, I came across Andrew Francis' painting entitled "Bird Song" which is featured at the Park West Art Gallery website.  What makes this particular painting so appealing to me is the impressionistic style and the gorgeous purple flowers.  Purple is my favorite color, by the way...

Find Art Inspiration at Park West Art Gallery

Mediterranee by Jean Claude Picot It's been awhile since I've picked up the paintbrushes, but I found some inspiration today as I browsed the Park West Art Gallery website.   One particular artist whose work caught my eye was Jean-Claude Picot, whose art is featured at the gallery.

Picot's work takes one on an adventure into the world of vibrant and bold color.  I especially like the piece pictured here, "Mediterranee" because of the simple use of lines that come together to produce a very detailed and whimsical painting.  My eyes move all around the composition - taking in the scenery...

Jean-Claude Picot offers us a modern view of impressionism, which is one of my favorite styles of painting.

Beauty Salon Greeting Card

Every now and then someone will stumble across this blog looking for a "beauty salon greeting card".  Many people assume because I have the word "salon" in the title of my business that I own a beauty salon.  However, the word "salon" in my business means "art salon".

Well, I thought it would be fun to create a beauty salon greeting card anyways...Click the image to buy a card(s) at my online gift shop.

Gifts That Inspire

The past week was full of inspirational moments - From reading Phil Gerbyshak's book, to discovering my niche at Online Business Resources, watching Julienne Irwin sing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", and creating inspirational apparel and art for my CafePress shop

I especially liked creating the graphics and art for my latest items in the gift shop.  Here are a couple of them...

This is a photo of a bowl of apples that I took and edited in Photoshop. It is available as a print over at the gift shop...

"Tessie's Flowers" Oil Painting

Flower Trio Painting Back in May I started a new painting, but at the time I really didn't know what was going to come of it...

Well, not too long after writing up that post a memory of my mother's doodles came to mind. Whenever she used to talk on the phone, she would start doodling with a pen and paper.  Most of the time she would draw flowers that look like the ones that I painted here. I realize now how much of her creative talent she passed onto me.

This painting is still a work in progress.  I'm not sure I want to keep the background on this one...I have titled it "Tessie's Flowers" in memory of my mother, Teresita, a.k.a. "Tessie".

Food and Art

Tomato Salad and SpinachMy former Type-A personality didn’t really like to cook all that much.  My boyfriend can attest to this.  For many months he succumbed to eating chicken and plain white rice for months on end.  Cory, if you’re reading this, I’m sorry!

I always wondered what the big deal was about food.  For hundreds of years artists used food as a subject.  But now I know.  My attitude towards food has definitely changed in recent months.  I now enjoy cooking and find it to be a great destresser - especially when I’m drinking a glass of wine in the process ;)

During my trip to Chicago, my friend Karyn (who’s an awesome cook by the way!) made a great meal with this absolutely delectable tomato and cheese salad.  The colors of the food were so bold and bright that I had to take a picture of them.  Here’s my Photoshop rendition of part of the dinner we had that night.  Yum!  I'll title this piece "Tomato Salad and Spinach".

Plastic Surgery As An Art Form

The other night as I was flippin’ channels I came upon the Dr. 90210 show.  It’s a reality show that goes into the lives of a few plastic surgeons in Beverly Hills.  I was never one who supported people in this type of occupation, but after watching the show, I now have certain level of respect for them.
Changing someone’s body is a very challenging task.  It’s not like you can erase your mistakes like a pencil drawing.  For a plastic surgeon, the human body form is like a sculpture to be molded into another form - very similar to the skills used by the potter who molds the clay into a vase or the artist who creates a masterpiece.

I used to be judgmental about people who wanted to change their bodies, but after writing this post I realize that just by opening up and releasing that negativity it has opened up the creative channels and has given me energy and inspiration that I’ve been needing.  It’s funny how connecting art and something that was previously perceived as not an art form can do that!

The Beginning of the Latest Painting

Finally!  I couldn't stand not painting any longer.  I took out the paints and brushes, listened to some oldies on my mp3 player and simply slapped up some paint on a canvas.

This is just the first layer of the painting.  I don't know exactly where I'm going with this one.  I was drawn to green and brown today.  The brown actually looks black, though.  Most likely it will turn into something fun and abstract.  I'm using oils for this painting, so I have to wait a day or so before I can start painting again.  I'll be posting more pictures as I go along...stay tuned!

Creating Art For Your Home

Abstract Art by Maria PalmaI was laid off a few days after 9/11 and although I was a little sad at first, I came to realize my true passions in life. One of those passions was art.

For the first few months after my lay-off I sat in front of the TV and watched HGTV all day long.  My interest grew in creating a beautiful interior for my apartment, however, I was on a very tight budget.  I loved paintings but didn’t have the money to buy original art paintings.  That’s when I decided to create my own art!

If you’ve always wanted to create art for your home, here are a couple ways that you can:

  • Paint your own abstract art.  Abstract art is the easiest way to create a painting - especially if you feel that you don’t have “a creative bone” in your body.  Can you paint a circle?  How about a square?  Well, my friend, you’re on your way to painting your very own masterpiece.  Start with abstract art and just get a feel of working with a paintbrush.

Earth Day and Creating Art

I missed Earth Day in Balboa Park this year, but I do have fond memories of celebrating Earth Day a few years ago when I volunteered to do art with the kids.  The World Beat Center was having their own celebration and I demonstrated how we could use recycled items and nature to create unique art.  Kids love doing this!  You can use any of these items:

* plastic bottles
* empty food cans
* rocks
* glass bottles

Buy acrylic paint and paintbrushes at your local art store and create works of art on these items!

I wish I had pictures of the Earth Day event, but they were eaten up by my old computer!  However, I did come across this article about an artist, Vickie Buxton, who uses recycled bottles as her canvas.

How did you celebrate Earth Day?

Art and Anatomy

One thing I want to be good at is drawing the body.  I met an artist at the bookstore one day who gave me a quick tutorial, but I haven’t gotten around to actually practicing what he taught me.  One time in drawing class back in college I drew a skeleton, but it ended up looking like a tree during the winter time!

The San Diego Chiropractic blog says this about art and anatomy:

“...The spine and skeleton by the way draw beautiful lines if you look at them from various directions. Why would an artist not use the beauty of the straight mobile spine and contrast it to the degenerated crooked spine?”

Drawing the skeleton is truly an art form and there are many artists who make a great living fromVitruvian Man by Leonardo Da Vinci doing this.  I came across this drawing of a figure with skeleton and spinal nerves and realized just how many curvy lines and how much shading is involved in creating the bones in our body.  Getting the proportions right is the tricky part for me.

One artist who was phenomenal at drawing the human body is Leonardo Da Vinci.  We know him well for Vitruvian Man (pictured here), The Last Supper and Mona Lisa, but he also did a large number of paintings depicting the Madonna Child.  His paintings were highly complex and very detailed.

By the way:  The San Diego Chiropractic blog is hosting a writing contest for those of you who love writing short stories.  The contest ends on March 31st.  It’s been awhile since I’ve written fiction, but I’ll probably give it a shot!

The Business Side of Art

I’d like to share a post I wrote over at CustomersAreAlways titled 12 Topics I’d Blog About If I Owned An Art Gallery.  I haven’t come across any art gallery blogs yet, so if you own an art gallery and are thinking about starting a blog, the article offers some good ideas.

Speaking of art business, last night I pondered over the idea of whether or not I should phase out of my own art business.  Right now I have so much going on with my writing and jewelry business.  I want something for myself, ya’ know?  I want to do something where I’m not thinking about making money off of it.  It seems that I’ve turned all my hobbies into money-making opportunities and now I have all these business responsibilities like marketing and bookkeeping. (Which I dis-like, by the way.  If you do too, you may want to check out this San Diego Book Keeping company)   The business aspect of it has taken away from the enjoyment of creating.

Anyhow, for those of you who are interested in starting your own art business, I did come across this great article by Kelly Bersheim, the founder of Lumina Candles & Art.   She offers tips on how to start your own candle business, but the tips can apply to anyone in the art industry.

Art Quotes and Thoughts

Recently I came across this quote from Coco Chanel:

“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

This quote can be applied to art as well, dontcha think?  Art is everywhere, it’s in the sky, in blogs, in cross tattoos...Art is the way we live and what is happening in the world today.

Speaking of quotes, here are some great art quotes I’d like to share:

“Art is contemplation. It is the pleasure of the mind which searches into nature and which there divines the spirit of which Nature herself is animated.”
--Auguste Rodin

“It is paint's organic nature that helps me to understand life. For within the act of painting there is a history, a continuum of alchemy through the Ages that lives on in paint.” -- Lori Agostino

“The artist should open the eyes of the viewer to overlooked beauty that is sometimes right in front of us.” -- Kenn Backhaus

You can find a huge directory of art quotes over at The Painter’s Keys.

Creativity Blocks and Art Therapy

Watercolor flower paintingI’ve been going through a creativity block the past couple weeks.  Perhaps it has to do with dealing with family members passing away and my mind has been cluttered with random thoughts and dreams that don’t make sense.  Many artists use their art to work out their grief, but for me, I would rather stare mindlessly at cartoons.  I’ve done a little bit of blogging, but even then I don’t feel quite inspired.

I’m just numb.

I do long to start up painting again.  I start feeling this way when I want to release some frustrations.  After reading this art therapy blog, I know I have all this creative energy that needs to express itself.  This line resonates with me:

Creating art can help reshape life experiences that may be too painful for words, providing an outlet for emotions that may be therapeutic in the hands of an experienced art therapist.

Now if I can just find my paintbrushes...

Art: Who Are We to Judge?

"Midnight Blues" by Maria PalmaWe all have our own opinions of what is and isn’t art.  What is good art and what is bad art?  I believe that art is beauty and you know the old saying about beauty...it’s in the eyes of the beholder!

I once took a painting class at the local community college.  It was just for fun, plus I wanted to learn different techniques and meet other artists in San Diego.  I loved the class, but the only thing I didn’t like was when it was time to critique other student’s pieces.  Not that I can’t handle constructive criticism, but at times I had a vision for a piece that didn’t follow the status quo.  After all, art is a subjective subject.  Who are you to judge what another person may think is beautiful or just right?  It would be like me judging someone who decided to undergo rhinoplasty.  Toronto would be a good place to visit to broaden your art horizons if you feel the need to judge someone’s art.

Melissa Mannon of Garden Portraits also shares her thoughts on subjectivity in art...Yes, the positives always outweigh the negative - in art and in life ;)

A Work in Progress

I bought a new canvas and paintbrushes last month but I haven’t been inspired to do any paintingWork in Progress by Maria Palma lately.  Perhaps a visit to a museum or gallery will give me back my mojo!

Speaking of painting, I have a work in progress - this painting pictured here that I’ve been working on for, oh, over two years?!?  I guess it could be finished, but it still calls me to do something else with it.  This isn’t exactly the best picture of it and you can’t tell that the purple tulips have purple beads sewn onto the canvas.

This is one of those pieces that is a manifestation of things that just come to mind - a very mindless abstract is what I like to call it.  I just get lost in thought and paint away - no plan for what the end result is going to look like.

Update:  After posting this I realized that I had already talked about this painting before!  Guess I really need to just work on it!

Have You Visited My Gift Shop Yet?

I know I probably should have promoted this earlier this month, but perhaps there are some of you that are a little late on the holiday shopping and need some gifts for loved ones…

You may or may not know that I have a little gift shop at Café Press where I sell note cards and gift items with my art on them. Pictured here is a journal with a picture of a flower painting I did a few years ago.

If you have something special in mind that you’d like to see in my shop, don’t hesitate to let me know!

Celebrity Art

I came across this article by Baird Jones at artnet Magazine which talks about collecting celebrity art. Whether it is artwork done by celebrities or art that was owned by celebrities, there seems to be great money made in this market.

Baird recommends two galleries where you can find celebrity art for sale:Limited Edition Print by Mike Sergeanthttp://www.imagemakersart.com/ and http://www.rogallery.com/

I’ve always wondered why our society has such an obsession with celebrities. Perhaps people see these celebrities’ lives as very exciting and wish they could be rich and famous. My only hope is that some of the celebrities would spend less on Los Angeles rhinoplasty and spend more on supporting artists Wink

Pictured here is a limited edition print of Prince (one of my favorite musicians of all time) done by Mike Sergeant.  Available at eBay...

Why I Love Abstract Art

When it comes to painting, I love abstract art. Just sitting there with a paintbrush in my hand and no set plan about what I’m about to create is pretty exciting to me. I call it a form of meditation because I can just paint with no thoughts…no boundaries… just relaxing and letting the paintbrush take off. I like having the freedom to express myself (like Neil Crespi) - in a positive way, of course.

I came across Thaneeya McArdle’s website where she has some awesome abstract paintings for sale. You can read her blog about her art proMaria Palma's Abstract Artcesses here…

Pictured here is a piece I made awhile back. It was sold a couple years ago! I love incorporating circles into my abstract pieces. Perhaps that’s why I gravitate towards the Audi ;)

Off Into the Art Blogosphere I Go...

Balboa ParkI love going to Balboa Park on Free Tuesdays. Every Tuesday some of the museums have free admission and my favorite museums to visit are The Museum of Photographic Arts and the Museum of Art.

However, today I’m not able to make it down to Balboa Park, so instead I wandered around the blogosphere to find other interesting art bloggers. Via the Art News Blog I came across Art & Perception which has fascinating thoughts and pictures from different artists.

There’s a post about being an artist and having a “day job”. One of the day jobs I had in the past was working in the kids’ shoe department at Nordstrom. I love kids and I took the job because I knew it paid well, but boy was it exhausting! Kids can be quite particular about the shoes they wear ;)

Anyways, fast forward to now and I’m doing everything that I love. Making jewelry and writing are my passions and fortunately I’m making enough money to live comfortably! A dream come true...What about you?

Body Art

One of the things I’ve always wanted to do was to get a tattoo. I’ve played around with the idea forChair Tattoo by Nick Baxter about ten years now and still haven’t decided what I want to put on my body. Perhaps a butterfly...or a unicorn... My boyfriend has turned his whole body into a tattoo art gallery ;)

I recently learned about this website that is dedicated to tattoo designs. It has all types of resources on tattoo art and you can even upload a picture of your own tattoo and have people rate it. Kindof like the Digg for tattoos. Interesting. I have much respect for tattoo artists. It really is a skill that needs to be perfected because if you mess up...well, you’re pretty screwed!

Here’s another interesting website with pictures of furniture design tattoos?!? Now, that’s really interesting. Pictured here is a design by Nick Baxter.

Gallery 504 Art Show

Great things are happening with my business, so you'll have to excuse me once again for the lack of posts here.  As I sit here on the Eve of Thanksgiving, I think about all the wonderful things that I'm thankful for - especially for the gifts of creativity that God has blessed me with!  Then I thought of you, my reader, and give thanks for all your support and feedback here.  Well, of course, I then thought that I should write up a post to do just that!  So, here I am and since I'm here, wanted to update you on the art show I did a couple weeks ago...

The event was very inspiring for me as I realized that I only have a few paintings on canvas and need to get back into painting again!  I guess I could have had displayed some of  my photography, but didn't think about it at the time.

I got to check out all the other galleries in the area and was met with so much creative energy!  Ray Street is a very short street that houses several galleries.  There were many art lovers out and about.

Although I didn't sell any pieces, it was a great experience and the best part was meeting other great artistic minds!

Thougths From an Artist Who Misses Her Paints

Blessed Day PaintingI miss my paints and my paint brushes.  Right now they're in storage while I'm staying down here in Mexico.  However, I do feel that this break will help with my creativity.  It'll be interesting when I do pick up the paintbrush again - just to see where my mind takes me.

Usually when I start painting, I don't have any idea what the final piece is going to look like.  I just go with the flow and let my mind wander.  Sometimes I'll start out with one thing, but end up doing something totally different.

This painting here was done a few years ago.  I love Impressionist painting and one of my all-time favorite artists is Monet.  I went to see an exhibit in Las Vegas not too long ago with paintings of Monet...I was in awe.

Oh, I'm itching to start painting again!  After doing quite a bit of writing, I feel it's time for a change...

Where Contemporary Art Meets Jewelry Making

I've always thought of fashion as a form of art.  Even as I create my own jewelry, I'm formulating compositions in my mind like Monet would have done back in the day.  So when I happened upon this book, The New Jewelry, I was very much inspired by all the pieces featured.  For jewelry makers, this is a great how-to book full of photos with step-by-step instructions on creating innovative and distinctive jewelry.  From ceramic, to resin and paper there are so many materials to enchant the jewelry designer and this book can help you discover new avenues in jewelry making.

In the introduction of the book Carles Codina i Armengol, the author, says this:

"I am more interested in the processes that are based on certain concepts and values that often are more akin to contemporary art than to the requirements of the marketplace.  Thus, I believe that making creative objects should involve a certain amount of reflection and a close personal relationship with the materials, and that it should also involve a slow, precise method of workingtha twill produce a consumer item that is more durable, more stylized, and much more personal."

This book has my creative juices flowing!

Don't Try, Just Do: A Work in Progress

Untitled Abstract by Maria PalmaA reader suggested that I put up more of my artwork here, so here you go...an unfinished piece that I started quite awhile ago.  Taking this picture has spurred some inspiration to keep working on it.  It's not a very good picture because I took it at night and had to use the digital camera's flash.  They say it's better to take photographs of art under natural lighting.

Anyhow, I still don't have a title for this piece.  It's one of those pieces where I've just gone with the flow and let the paintbrush take over!  You can't tell from the picture, but where the purple tulips are, I've stitched little purple seed beads to give it some texture and interest.  I used oil and applied some of the paint with a knife - again to add texture.

A pretty random piece, to say the least, but it makes for great therapy ;)  I can pretend that I'm back in preschool again without a care in the world and not think about someone else's idea of what art is.  I'm not trying here, just doing.

Art and Diversity

I got my first business client not too long ago who purchased a painting of downtown San Diego to hang in his office.  A couple weeks ago I received an email from his office manager requesting three more paintings - putting me on cloud 9!  It's not often that you see original art hanging up in a business office here in San Diego, so I'm thrilled to be spotlighted :)

Dr. Ellen Weber, a colleague of mine at KnowMoreMedia.com, posted an article titled "Art Rewires Your Visual Spatial Brain for Diversity" and offers us some tips to get art into workplace:

1. Ask each person to hang an art piece near his or her desk that represents their particular belief about diversity...

2. Highlight one artwork each month and have that person relate the art to diversity in your organization...

3. Include a culturally diverse icon within your letterhead to show how your organization values opposing views on most topics...

One Thousand Paintings, Money, and Marketing

More power to them... Today I came across Seth Godin's post about the One Thousand Paintings craze and then just now I read the Art News Blog's interview with Anthony White

What these two artists have in common is that they've taken something simple and turned it into art that people are clamoring to buy.  It's amazing what word of mouth marketing and a few testimonials can do for one's art career.  This is what Anthony White says:

"A lot of locals hate my work but I find that they do the best job when it comes to advertising."

Isn't it funny that the people who hate actually do the most talking about you?  I'm not talking about me, of course!  It's just a general statement :)

Trying To Find A Balance Between Creating Art & Writing

Closeup of Beautiful FlowerAs a writer and an artist, it can be quite challenging to find a balance between doing both.  For me, I'm beginning to find a writing rhythm and my thoughts come out more freely when I focus on writing for a set amount of time versus trying to switch off between the two throughout the day.  It used to be that I would write for a little while, then make jewelry for an hour or two, and then go back to writing at night.  However, lately it seems that I've been doing writing more than anything.

I did make it over to Alotta Jewelry the other day to buy a few beads and some sterling silver.  Even though I did the bead shopping, it still didn't spark any inspiration to make jewelry for some reason.

My passion for photography is growing and I'm having a blast taking pictures of nature during my travels around town.  I've created a couple "albums" over at Flickr.  I've also discovered a great photography tutorial and tips website called "Digital Photography School".

New Adventures in Photography & Jewelry

I wasn't quite sure whether or not I should start another blog being that I have so many blogs right now to keep up with, but somehow I feel the need to do an art and jewelry blog.  In the long run I think it will be beneficial for me and for you, my friend, customer, and reader, to be able to track my growth as an artist.

With that said, it's been quite rainy here in San Diego and has made for some great photographs of clouds and blue skies in between the rainy days.  Here's a view of the sky from beautiful La Jolla, California.

View From La Jolla

It's also been a great week for making jewelry as well.  This is a fun retro-geometric-looking piece in my favorite color combinations of brown and blue.

Retro NecklaceYou can check out the details of this necklace in the new necklace studio of my website.

Well, it's 2 a.m. and it's been a long day of writing!  Time to catch some z's :)
